Defying the "you only wear one side of a reversible" rule: The "double-A-side" coat from SCYE BASICS.

SCYE BASICS / Cotton Gabardine Reversible Coat

There is something slightly mysterious about reversible clothing.

"You can wear it on either side."

Even though you bought it with that in mind, you end up wearing the same side every time.

I am sure many of you have had that experience.

The reason is simple: just because it is reversible doesn't necessarily mean both sides are crafted with the same level of perfection.

The front side might look great, but once you flip it, you find the seams or specifications to be bothersome.

The silhouette might feel a bit unnatural when worn inside out.

Or perhaps you like one side, but the other feels like an "afterthought."

The SCYE BASICS
"Cotton Gabardine Reversible Coat" is a little different in that regard.

Both the front and the back are equally capable of taking the lead.

That is why the word "reversible" just doesn't feel like enough for this coat.

The reason it deserves to be called a "double A-side" lies in the details of its tailoring.

01|Two classics in one garment

The first interesting thing is that the character of the materials differs greatly between the front and the back.

The front is iridescent cotton gabardine.

It is a material with depth, where the color changes depending on how the light hits it and the angle from which it is viewed.

It has the crispness characteristic of a high-density woven gabardine, creating a sharp, elegant silhouette for the coat while retaining the effortless feel of cotton.

The beige color also pairs perfectly with this material.

While it has casual roots similar to chinos or military wear, the luster and crispness give it a slightly more dressed-up appearance.

It is casual, yet somehow sophisticated.

Even when styled as shown here—with a black knit vest, wide trousers, and leather shoes—the coat never looks out of place.

Then, when you flip it, the impression changes completely.

What emerges is shepherd's check wool.

The fine check pattern evokes a British classic feel, combined with the unique warmth of wool.

If the cotton gabardine side is "urban casual," this side has a more traditional and composed expression.

It is the same coat, yet the view changes entirely just by switching the material.

This is the initial allure of this garment.

02|The secret to "looking clean inside out" lies in the unseen details

The most difficult aspect of a reversible structure is not simply sewing two pieces of fabric together.

It is making it a proper garment regardless of which side is facing out.

What makes SCYE BASICS fascinating is that the design for this has been thought through down to the smallest detail.

For instance, the hem.

Usually, when you flip a piece, the fabric from the other side might peek through, or the sewing finish might look distinctly "like the inside."

In this coat, even the parts that peek out from the hem when worn are tailored using the same matching fabric.

In other words, it is not:

"The inside is showing because it's turned inside out,"

but rather,

"It was designed from the start to be worn with this side facing out."

This difference has a huge impact on the level of perfection when actually worn.

It is a subtle detail, but for clothes lovers, this is exactly what makes it irresistible.

03|Horsehair canvas interlining creates a coat-like three-dimensionality

Another point not to be missed is the horsehair canvas tailoring.

This interlining technique is a traditional method used in tailored jackets and classic coats.

Instead of gluing the interlining directly to the fabric like a fusible interlining, it builds a three-dimensional form by allowing the fabric and the canvas to adapt to each other.

This difference becomes apparent as you continue to wear the garment.

It is not just that the shape is perfect when brand new; over time, the fabric and interlining conform to your body's movements, gradually changing into an expression tailored to your personal way of wearing it.

The reason the SCYE BASICS coat looks a bit different from just any "reversible outer" is that this philosophy of tailoring is at its foundation.

Of course, this doesn't mean that because it uses horsehair canvas, it will never lose its shape—that is a simplification.

However, the idea of creating the shape of a garment not just through the materials, but including the internal structure, is truly characteristic of SCYE BASICS.

SCYE is a brand that reconstructs British classics from a modern perspective.

And SCYE BASICS develops this philosophy into basic wear that encompasses materials, cutting, and internal structure.

04|The one-piece raglan sleeve creates a rounded shoulder

Another feature that defines the silhouette of this coat is the one-piece raglan sleeve.

Raglan sleeves are structured to transition naturally from the neck to the sleeve, without a defined line at the shoulder.

By combining this with SCYE's signature three-dimensional pattern, a soft roundness is created from the shoulder down to the arm.

You can clearly see this characteristic in the photos.

Even with the dropped shoulders, it does not look merely "big."

The sleeve naturally extends from the body and drapes loosely down to the hem.

It is not "oversized," but "classic with breathing room."

This distinction is what I believe makes it so "SCYE."

Especially for a coat, it is crucial that it doesn't feel restrictive when layering a jacket or knit underneath.

The one-piece raglan sleeve contributes not only to aesthetic beauty but also to a natural range of motion when moving your arms.

05|This styling: "Breaking the classic, just a little"

For this look, I paired it with a black knit vest and black wide trousers.

On my feet are polished black leather shoes.

And a cap and glasses.

At first glance, this styling has quite a few classic elements, but the cap and relaxed pants keep the balance from feeling too formal.

By draping the iridescent cotton gabardine coat over this, a slightly sporty nuance is added to the entire look.

Personally, I think this "classic, but not *too* classic" balance is the appeal of this coat.

06|Switching to the check side, the same garment becomes a bit "vintage"

Then, flip the coat.

When you bring the shepherd's check to the front, the British atmosphere suddenly intensifies.

In the photos, I've popped the collar to really make the check pattern stand out.

On the other hand, if you leave the front open, the beige gabardine peeks through from the inside.

Rather than showing only the check pattern, you can also style it so that "the beige remains within the check."

I like this sense of space.

Shepherd's check is not as overly dressy as glen check, and it doesn't have the bold, assertive character of a tartan.

That's why it looks natural with denim or chinos, and feels perfectly fine worn over a suit or wool trousers.

In one single garment, you have both a British classic and a modern piece of daily wear.

07|For on-duty style, wear it over a suit

Of course, this coat isn't just for your days off.

Wear it with the shepherd's check side out over a navy or charcoal suit.

Or a jacket-and-trousers style with wool pants.

Add leather shoes.

Just that combination makes for a very sharp winter look.

Conversely, if you go with the iridescent gabardine side, it softens things up even when worn over a suit.

In other words, you can use it to "combine your work coat and your weekend coat into one."

The reversible function isn't just a gimmick to make you feel like you got a good deal; it actually expands your wardrobe range.

08|The basic way to size it is "wear it loose"

It comes in two sizes: 38 and 40.

The actual measurements are as follows:

Size Sleeve Length Width Length
38 90cm 66cm 103cm
40 92cm 68cm 107cm

It is designed with a very relaxed fit.

Especially with a width of 66–68cm, you can tell it's not a slim-fit coat meant to cling to the body, but a silhouette based on the assumption that you will layer knits or jackets underneath.

The model in the photos is 182cm tall and wearing a size 40.

Having this much room allows the shoulders to drop naturally and brings out the beautiful roundness of the one-piece raglan sleeves.

The longer sleeves look great as they are, or you can roll them up to show the lining fabric.

When choosing a size, rather than simply going by "I'm ○cm tall, so I need a 40," I recommend choosing based on:

  • Will you be wearing it over a jacket?
  • Will it be primarily over knits?
  • Do you prefer a cleaner fit?
  • Do you want the loose, coat-like feel?

09|"Two coats in one" is not enough

When explaining the appeal of a reversible coat, the phrase "two for the price of one" is often used.

But for this SCYE BASICS piece, I feel differently.

Because the two sides are not just different—there is a reason for each of them.

The iridescent cotton gabardine has crispness and luster.

The shepherd's check has the warmth of wool and a British classic vibe.

There is the three-dimensionality from the horsehair canvas tailoring.

The natural roundness from the one-piece raglan sleeves.

And furthermore, the matching-fabric finish that was considered even for the parts visible when flipped.

Looking at it this way, this coat is not clothing that relies on a "reversible" gimmick to sell.

It is a garment for which the structure itself was thoroughly thought through to successfully realize two different materials in one coat.

That is why you want to wear both sides.

10|Things that last longer than trends

Some clothes are the most fun the moment you buy them.

On the other hand, there are clothes that, years later, make you think, "I'm so glad I bought this."

I think this SCYE BASICS coat leans toward the latter.

Iridescent cotton gabardine.

Shepherd's check wool.

Raglan sleeves.

A classic coat balance.

None of these are details intended to chase trends themselves.

That is precisely why you can wear it for a long time by changing how you style it.

There will be days you wear it over a suit, and days you go out in sweats and denim.

There will be days you choose the check side, and days you choose the beige side.

Even as your preferences in clothing or your lifestyle changes, you can adapt the way you wear it to suit those changes.

That is a bit different from just "long-lasting clothes."

It is a garment that retains the reasons to keep wearing it for a long time.

I believe that is what this coat is.
