"Reconstructing the Classic" — Gurkha shorts for midsummer, tailored in Ventile cotton
What I poured into the design of these shorts is the "coexistence of function and elegance."
Rooted in military uniforms, Gurkha shorts are, by their very origin, highly rational and efficient. Yet, at the same time, there is a structural beauty that evokes a sense of refinement. I wanted to reconstruct that charm as a pair of shorts suitable for the modern city dweller.
The Ventile Choice
The fabric adopted for these shorts is "Ventile cotton," developed for the British Royal Air Force.
Woven to an extremely high density, this material is exceptionally well-balanced, offering superior water repellency and wind resistance without compromising the breathability and texture of natural fibers.
A design with military roots is naturally well-suited to a material of military origin.
However, what I sought here was not an "imposition of functionality," but rather a presence expressed as "high quality." While not flashy in appearance, the essence of this fabric lies in its muted luster when hit by light and the feeling of density when held in your hands.
Shorts tailored by a tailor
These shorts are not, so to speak, a "shortened version of summer trousers," but rather "tailored pants optimized for summer."
・A deeper rise maintains a classic look while providing a sense of security and comfort around the waist.
・Double-in pleats provide room around the waist while beautifully shaping the line of the legs.
・Side adjuster detailing ensures a beautiful, belt-less fit at the waist.
・The hem is finished with a light cuff (turn-up), offering a sense of ease that works well with both jackets and sandals.
At first glance, these may be categorized as "shorts," but I focused most intently on the balance of them being "trousers you can wear in summer."
Between style and comfort
I am always thinking about "how to land the classics in the modern day while still paying respect to them."
With these shorts, I aimed for a presence that does not lose its dignity, while keeping "being comfortable" as the absolute prerequisite.
It is a design with room to breathe, one that pairs just as well with a linen jacket from Paris as it does with a short-sleeved shirt from Naples.
In the city, on your travels, worn with a jacket, or paired with sandals.
"Looking polished, yet comfortable to wear."
I believe this is work that can only be done by shorts tailored by a tailor.
